About Bird Names

Bird Names is an off-center pop band living in Chicago. Their songs are raggedly catchy and inventively experimental, a kaleidoscopic world of ideas, instruments, personality and style. The band is four: Phelan La Velle, Albert Schatz, Cohen Jay, and David Lineal. Everyone swaps instruments live and on recordings, and write and record the songs in collective isolation.

bio

Officially the band's fifth full-length album, Sings The Browns goes to exotic places by loose, intuitive musicianship and an ethos of radical play.

Inspired by street-level living, knotty feelings, and a quest to make a language of the occult, Bird Names commands a broad scope. Sing-along waltzes walk hand-in-hand with ad hoc scrambled guitar lines, a freak-out tension of collapse paws the songs apart, while an ingenuous love of melody marbles the album together. The album's breadth suggests the band's diverse influences, which include the kraut rock of Can and Faust, traditional vocal pop, Captain Beefheart, Patti Paige, honky tonk country, Dolly Mixture, doo wop, western swing, classic dub, 80s college rock and beyond.

news and press

"one of the most well-crafted, unique, and far-out pop albums in recent years"
Tiny Mix Tapes

"They bang and clatter and hoot and howl, like Beefheart and Can and Os Mutantes shot through cannons into cockfighting matches. It's bizarre and uproarious, disorienting and just plain out there. But my god, is it fantastic. . . sounds very much unlike any pop music that any earthlings are capable of producing."
Treble Zine

"Instant weirdo classic, every song's a winner"
The Ear-Conditioned Nightmare

"Cultic, layered man-calls and whoops, like Akron/Family with whips of jungle-bright, psychedelic guitar encircling. Mix heartily with Panda Bear and Abe Vigoda and it's exactly the chemical compound for exultation."
